Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality is the broad term for overlaying digital content into the physical world. AR comes under one of two categories based on how it is accessed:

Web Based
This is typically accessed through the visitor scanning a QR code next to an exhibit which redirects to a web page to launch an individual experience.

App Based
This is a more traditional app that the visitor would download onto their device or could come preinstalled on a tablet they collect from reception.

Web AR

Web AR currently is primarily designed to recognise 2D images and overlay content on them. A good example of this would be information about a painting in an art gallery.

Web AR is significantly quicker to produce than an app as it only uses the visitors web browser to access the content.

As a technology it is still in its infancy and currently has several limitations in what it can achieve.

App AR

Traditional mobile apps are almost unlimited in what they can achieve. This would likely be a longer term option for most venues as it allows other services such as maps, ‘whats on’, and further services to be integrated.

Unlike web AR options the app would not require any physical targets to launch experiences and can recognise both 2D and 3D objects.
